Plein air is a style of painting made popular during the French Impressionist period of the late 1800's. "En Plain Air" is a french phrase meaning "in the open air". Artists would work outside painting from direct observation, working quickly to capture the shifting light. The resulting paintings are often more loosely rendered than studio works and regarded as more acurate portrayals of their subjects.

The paintings in this section were all done from life in the field.

The Sturgis Series is a set of 6 watercolor paintings made during the annual Black Hills Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. The week long event attracts 500,000 bikers to a sleepy little cow town of 6,500. Painting amidst the pandemonium presents additional challenges to plein air painting.
